Here is a short film created in 1946 by the Nikitchenko brothers called ‘Optical Overlay’ demonstrating pioneering special effects for it’s time. The film is about five minutes of David Ashkenazi playing the piano while a sailor played by Vladimir Zernov accompanies by dancing. While the film seems relatively harmless, it’s called the Russian Terminator for a reason, at around the three minute mark it makes a completely unexpected turn, and a rather unnerving one at that. Worst of all, the film was produced by Soyuzdetfilm, the official production company of films for children, possibly meaning they were being shown this as well.

this is the intro scene in Chex Quest, a cd rom game that came free in boxes of Chex cereal for a while in the late 90’s. i think the game is basically the same game as Doom, except it’s about Chex. when I was in kindergarten, there was a kid in my class named Eric whose soul seemed almost consumed by this game. Eric probably had a genius IQ. he spoke in big words, he knew all these advanced factoids about nature and space and engineering, and he got yelled at a lot for cracking open books and reading them while the teacher was talking. his defining characteristic was the fact that he had tons of these Chex Quest CDs and he would just hand them out to other kids and give them tips and hints. he always pronounced it “Chax Quast”. he moved away to some other town after that year. no one from my hometown seems to remember him except me.
